Human society has some deeply-rooted prejudices that date from ages. The
biasedness is often manifested in creative work and writing is one of the major
forms of expression of biasedness. Creative writing and academic
writing are two of the most popular forms of writing and they both have element
of biasedness?
Gender bias is one of the common forms of bias that we
tend to see in writing. Gender bias is a form of sexism that indicates the superiority
of one gender over another. Writers don't do it deliberately since such
prejudices are deeply ingrained in our society. So it is not always possible to
stay neutral on certain issues that deal
with men and women.
However, not many writers are aware of this grave issue. Since language is an
integral part of human society and interaction, the way we say or write is how
the world interprets our ideas. The
mainstream writing is focused on educating people about the different
subjects. Therefore, it is extremely important that writer should be conscious
about gender bias in their writing as it can affect the impressionable minds of
the readers. Let’s now learn how easily you can avoid gender bias in your writing.
·
Swap
Gender-Specific Terms With Gender-Neutral Terms
The most used form of gender bias in writing is the use of gender-specific words when both genders are
involved. Many of these
words can easily be made gender-neutral.
·
Restructure
Singular Pronouns, And Make Them Plural
To avoid the repetitiveness of using him or
her constantly, you can restructure it to make the pronouns plural, using ‘they’,
‘their’, ‘them’, or ‘themselves’. It is important to remember that, when
using this method of gender-neutral writing, the entire sentence should agree
with the plural form of the pronoun.
For Example: "Each of the players had their picture taken with the
gold medals."
This sentence is incorrect because each is singular and does not agree
with theirs. But, "All of the players had their pictures taken with the
gold medals." This sentence is restructured using the plural term all and
now agrees grammatically.

Avoid Using Male
Pronouns When Talking About Individuals In Mixed-Gender Groups
When writing something and referring to groups that contain both genders or referring
someone whose gender is unknown, we generally use male pronouns. Remember that ‘he’, ‘him’, ‘his’ or ‘himself ‘are
not all-encompassing terms for individual group
members, who may be either male or female. This is a disrespectful way of
writing, and also inaccurate and dismissive towards women. Instead of
using one male pronoun, you can use a male and female pronoun,
both.
For example: Instead of writing “The
student may bring his own books to class,” you
can write, “The student may bring her or his own books to class.”
·
Repeat The Noun
Instead Of Using A Pronoun
This method is repetitive
and formal, but it is better than gender bias
in writing. Instead of using a pronoun, rewrite it as a noun phrase.
For Example: Instead of writing,
“The professor can revoke the
grade, but he cannot expel a student from the class,”
write, “The professor can revoke the grade, but the professor cannot expel a
student from the class.”
